Hi, I am Ute (pronounced Oo-ta), a creative photography mentor and workshop leader.

This page began as a place to share my photography — but over time, it became something much more meaningful.

Like many people, my creative life changed when my personal life shifted. Becoming an empty nester and experiencing the loss of a loved one brought a new awareness: presence matters. And for me, photography became the clearest way to practice presence.

Working with manual lenses taught me how to slow down and truly see. It’s easy to take a technically perfect image — like painting by numbers — but if it lacks feeling, it never becomes a masterpiece. To create something meaningful, you have to pause, listen inward, and understand why you’re lifting the camera in the first place.

That’s what I do now — and what I help others discover through my workshops and mentoring sessions.

The Birth of Develop with Light

My love for photography isn’t just about capturing moments—it’s about storytelling, emotion, and pushing creative boundaries. That’s why I created Develop with Light, my bestselling workshop designed to help photographers break free from technical constraints and embrace creative exploration.

But something beautiful happened: the workshop didn’t just inspire individuals; it sparked a thriving community of like-minded photographers. Today, the Develop with Light community is a place where we learn, experiment, and grow together—supporting each other through challenges, sharing inspiration, and celebrating our creative breakthroughs.

My Passion for Lensbaby

I use creative tools like Lensbaby lenses and Omni filters not just to make beautiful images, but to explore emotion, stillness, and expression. My playful approach reflects who I am: a nature lover, a mother, an adventurer, and someone who has lived across cultures and continents — from Germany to South Korea, Brazil to California. This global perspective has shaped how I see the world: with empathy, curiosity, and color.

Creativity, Community & Connection

For me, photography is more than an art form—it’s a way of connecting with the world and with each other. I love experimenting, but I love sharing my knowledge just as much. Whether through my workshops, my Develop with Lightcommunity, or one-on-one mentoring, my goal is to inspire others to see the world differently and express themselves more freely.

Whether you’re here to learn, connect, or just be inspired — I’m so glad you’re part of the journey.

Why Californialover?

The name CaliforniaLover began as a simple Instagram handle — a nod to my deep love for the light, landscapes, and creative energy of this place. But over time, it grew into something more: a reflection of how rooted I’ve become in this environment and how much it has shaped my artistic journey. California’s wild coastline, golden sunsets, and open spirit have deeply influenced the way I see, feel, and photograph the world. Today, CaliforniaLover is not just a name — it’s a reflection of my visual voice and the creative freedom I hope to share with others.

Creativity begins with connection.
